How to Spend 100 million USD: an Opening Conference for the “Excellence Initiative” at AMU, Marek Kwiek describing research plans

A conference inaugurating the project – Initiative of Excellence – Research University took place in the Lubrański Hall. It was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin. As Prof. Marek Kwiek, one of the fathers of the success of the application for a research university, said: “We will not support publications in weak journals with the funds we have raised. We will not support cooperation with universities outside the Shanghai 500 and we will not finance expenditure on staff and activities outside the competition. Now the most prestigious magazines, prestigious partners and large grants will count.

Marek Kwiek’s speech – “Adam Mickiewicz University as a research university – global science and publications and international cooperation” – is right here:

According to Professor Marek Kwiek, although we are the third university in Poland, we are weakened by fewer scientific articles per employee, less citations and fewer publications in the best scientific journals.

– Today, we have 39% of international publications in Adam Mickiewicz University and Poland the least in Europe. This needs to be changed,” said Prof. Kwiek. – We assumed that the best predictor of future scientific successes of Adam Mickiewicz University as a research university is its current scientific potential, and the overriding goal is to support Adam Mickiewicz University as an international research university.

In Professor Warmus’s opinion, the funds for the research university will be used to finance applying for funds, but not scientific research. We will not support publications in weak scientific journals, nor will we support cooperation with universities outside the Shanghai 500. Everyone has a chance to be supported, but within the framework of internationalisation of scientific research.

– We will also not finance expenditure on staff and activities in the non-competition mode – added Prof. Kwiek – We assure you that everything we do will take place in a transparent competition mode. What counts today are the most prestigious magazines, prestigious partners and large grants.
